Heres what happened with the Blue Line train that got stuck under Boston Harbor
A decades-old cable fell in a subway tunnel Tuesday, causing a Blue Line train to stop and leaving approximately 465 passengers stranded under Boston Harbor. MBTA General Manager Phil Eng apologized to riders, affirming that safety remains a top priority. Passengers reported hearing a “snap” sound before the train lost power. Eng credited the train’s operator for spotting the downed cable, which is estimated to be between 50 and 60 years old. Emergency services evacuated passengers after power to the third rail was cut off.
Eng stated that crews will conduct interim repairs and permanently replace significant sections of the cable to enhance future reliability, especially in hard-to-access areas like under the harbor. He emphasized the need for proactive investment in the MBTA’s infrastructure to prevent larger scale issues later. Shuttle buses replaced rail service between Government Center and Airport stations during the evacuation and repair efforts, highlighting the immediate impact on local transit.
