Ipswich's Crane Beach boosts shark monitoring after 2024 sightings

Boston, MALocal News

Crane Beach in Ipswich, Massachusetts, implements enhanced shark monitoring measures following juvenile great white shark sightings in September 2024 that led to a water closure. The Ipswich Harbormaster will patrol the swim zone, while lifeguards will monitor from elevated chairs and watercraft throughout the summer. A shark detection buoy will be installed in the area where sharks were confirmed, serving as a primary monitoring method. If a shark sighting occurs, visitors must exit the water until public safety personnel can determine if a shark is present. Confirmed sightings will result in immediate water closures to protect beachgoers.

The Crane Beach Trustees have committed to regular training for lifeguards, EMTs, and frontline staff to ensure operational readiness. They are partnering with marine biologist Greg Skomal to enhance data sharing and monitoring efforts. These initiatives reflect a proactive approach to maintaining safety and addressing public concerns regarding shark activity in the area.
