Paddleboarders encounter great white shark off Woods Hole beach

Boston, MALocal News

On July 4, Margaret Bowles and Maddie Cronin encountered a great white shark while paddleboarding off Stony Beach in Woods Hole, Cape Cod. Bowles, a Harvard student, and Cronin, attending the University of Toronto, noticed the shark's fin protruding from the water's surface. Bowles described the fin as being about eight inches high and “sort of fleshy grey,” prompting her to urge a swift return to shore. An adjunct scientist from the New England Aquarium identified the creature as likely being an immature great white shark. Bowles expressed surprise at the close encounter, stating, “A near miss is still a miss.

” This incident highlights the need for awareness while in the ocean, particularly in areas known for shark activity. Cape Cod has seen an increase in shark sightings in recent years, raising concerns among beachgoers and local authorities. The incident serves as a reminder for paddleboarders and swimmers to remain vigilant and prioritize safety in marine environments.
