Wu responds to accusations of betrayal from mother of slain teen

Boston, MALocal News

Irma Matos, a Roxbury resident, felt betrayed after the city of Boston canceled a planned memorial event for her son, Tierece Wiley, murdered in 2020. The family had organized a cookout and carnival to mark the fifth anniversary of his death, with initial city approval and funding. Just days before the event, the city revoked its permission, leading Matos to voice her disappointment and describe the situation as a betrayal. Mayor Michelle Wu responded by clarifying that neighborhood concerns played a significant role in the cancellation, as local residents were not involved in the application process. Wu offered to assist the family in planning the memorial at a different location using the grant funds.

The city’s block party program has granted over $30,000 to community events in the past year, aiming to enhance local engagement. Wu, who took office after Wiley's death, emphasized the city's commitment to supporting families affected by violence. She noted the importance of providing resources and support to those impacted by crime in Boston.
