City of Bloomington Sustainability Expands Solar, Energy Efficiency, Lighting (SEEL) Grant Program to Include Battery Energy Storage Systems for Nonprofits
The City of Bloomington's Department of Economic and Sustainable Development has expanded its Solar, Energy Efficiency, & Lighting (SEEL) Grant Program to include battery energy storage systems for nonprofit organizations. Eligible nonprofits can now apply for grants of up to $45,000, while small businesses may receive up to $25,000 for solar installations. These battery systems allow organizations to store low-cost solar energy for use during peak electricity rates, enhancing energy efficiency and resilience. Jolie Perry, Sustainability Programs Coordinator, stated that this initiative is crucial for maintaining essential services during power outages. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all funding is allocated, with options for financing remaining project costs through low-interest loans.
The SEEL program has already helped 54 local organizations implement solar and energy efficiency upgrades. Returning participants must wait at least 12 months after their last grant before reapplying. Further details about the program and funding can be found on the city's sustainability website.
