City of Bloomington Releases 2023 Greenhouse Gas Inventory, Tracking Progress on Climate Goals

Bloomington, INLocal News

The City of Bloomington has released its 2023 Greenhouse Gas Inventory, a comprehensive report that tracks emissions from critical sectors such as energy use, transportation, and waste management. This effort, conducted in collaboration with ClimateNav, underscores the city's ongoing commitment to sustainability and climate action. Since establishing its emissions baseline in 2018, Bloomington has made strides, including passing a Climate Action Plan in 2021 and setting clear emissions reduction targets. The latest inventory indicates that while the city is on track for a 25% reduction by 2030, it is falling short of the necessary reductions to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Currently, emissions are decreasing at a rate of 34,168 MTCO2e annually, but a more aggressive reduction of 44,268 MTCO2e per year is required.

The report also reveals that over 51% of emissions originate from grid-supplied electricity, highlighting the importance of energy efficiency and demand-side changes. Shawn Miya, the Assistant Director of Sustainability, emphasizes the need for community involvement and upcoming programs to promote sustainable practices. Residents can access the Climate Action Dashboard for insights and resources to contribute to these goals.
