COCC's Automotive Program Fans Out to High Schoolers
Central Oregon Community College (COCC) is addressing the local skills gap by expanding its automotive program to high school students throughout Central Oregon. The program, led by automotive director Jared Green, aims to inform students about career paths in trades amid a regional shortage of skilled workers. It offers four mobile classes, including small gas engines, mechanical systems, basic electricity, and college success, which rotate every ten weeks to various educational institutions, including the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and Deer Ridge Correctional Institution. This innovative mobile format allows for greater accessibility, particularly for students in remote areas who may face transportation challenges. The program has already shown success, with many participants continuing to COCC’s full automotive curriculum.
Green emphasized the importance of self-paced learning, making the classes adaptable to students' needs. This initiative not only equips students with valuable skills but also opens up pathways to well-paying jobs in a competitive job market. By fostering partnerships and providing real-world training, COCC is playing a pivotal role in shaping the future workforce in Central Oregon.
