City of Bend Seeking Applications for Affordable Housing
The City of Bend is calling for applications from eligible landowners to support affordable housing development through a one-time Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) expansion. This initiative is enabled by Oregon's Senate Bill 1537, passed in 2024, which allows local governments to increase residential land by up to 100 net acres to help alleviate the housing crisis. Bend has a significant need for affordable housing, with only 8% of the local workforce able to afford a home. The conceptual plan for any added land must include a minimum of 30% affordable housing units for households earning 80% of the area median income. Mayor Melanie Kebler highlighted the city's commitment to increasing affordable housing, stating that this bill is a crucial tool in their efforts.
The process allows for quicker development compared to traditional UGB expansions, which can take years. Community engagement is encouraged, with public comment opportunities before the City Council finalizes site selections. Landowners interested in this initiative must submit applications by October 14, 2024, providing a timely opportunity to contribute to Bend's housing solutions.
