City of Bend Renames Utility and Engineering Departments

Bend, ORLocal News

The City of Bend is renaming its Utility Department to 'Water Services Department' and its Engineering and Infrastructure Planning Department to 'Engineering Department. ' This decision aims to enhance public understanding of the services these departments provide, particularly in managing water resources such as drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater. Water Services Department Director Mike Buettner highlighted that the name change underscores the city's long-standing commitment to effective water management. The Engineering Department will continue its focus on infrastructure planning while adopting a more straightforward identity. The name changes will be gradually implemented, updating everything from departmental vehicles to educational and billing materials.

This transition aligns with the city's preparations for relocating to a new Public Works Campus, currently under construction and expected to be completed by fall 2025. The change is anticipated to reduce confusion with other utilities not provided by the city, such as power and natural gas, reflecting a commitment to clear communication and improved public service.
