Council Selects Site for Future Urban Growth Boundary Expansion
The Bend City Council has made a significant decision to address the housing crisis by selecting the Caldera Ranch site for future Urban Growth Boundary expansion. Located adjacent to Knott Road, this 91. 4-acre site will accommodate 716 housing units, with approximately 254 designated as affordable housing, representing 35. 5% of the total development, surpassing Senate Bill 1537 requirements. Mayor Melanie Kebler highlighted the urgent need for more affordable housing, as many residents face challenges in finding suitable living options.
The development will also include a small commercial area and a four-and-a-half-acre neighborhood park, fostering community engagement. The approval process will involve a UGB Amendment and Comprehensive Plan modifications, allowing for public input. If all goes as planned, construction could begin in summer 2027, with a ten-year build-out timeline. This initiative not only addresses housing needs but also aligns with state efforts for sustainable urban growth.
