New trails open near Lake Whatcom within Olsen Creek State Forest

Bellingham, WALocal News

Whatcom County has opened a new trail system in the Olsen Creek State Forest, providing seven miles of trails for outdoor enthusiasts. The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced the trails are available for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, accessible via the Y Street trailhead. Visitors do not need a Discover Pass to use the trails, but the DNR warns that parking is limited, which could impact access. The Olsen Creek Trail System forms part of the broader Baker to Bellingham Recreation Plan initiated by the DNR. Collaboration with local organizations, such as the Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition and the Washington Trails Association, facilitated the trail construction.

These new trails aim to enhance recreational opportunities in the area, which is popular for outdoor activities. The initiative reflects a growing commitment to improving local outdoor infrastructure. The opening of these trails marks a significant step in promoting outdoor recreation in Whatcom County.
