Funding secured to jumpstart senior housing projects in rural Whatcom County

The Bellingham and Whatcom County Housing Authority (BWCHA) has secured funding to repair the Sumas Square Apartments, which sustained significant damage from flooding in November 2021. All residents were forced to relocate after the disaster. Funding from the state Department of Commerce, FEMA, and insurance proceeds has made the project viable. BWCHA Executive Director Andrew Calkins highlighted the difficulty in obtaining funds for such rehabilitation efforts and expressed appreciation for state support. Construction is set to commence in 2026, with the goal of welcoming new residents by 2027.

In a related effort, Habitat for Humanity received a $15,000 grant from AARP to assist 20 low-income homeowners aged 50-plus in the Maple Falls, Sumas, Everson, and Nooksack areas. The grant will help with home repairs, including roof fixes and wheelchair ramps. These initiatives underscore the community's commitment to supporting its senior population and addressing housing needs.
