Authorities release new details of explosion in Oak Harbor residence

Bellingham, WALocal News

Mark Fakkema, 42, died in a massive explosion at his Oak Harbor home, according to the Island County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators determined he was constructing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) from commercial-grade fireworks, which detonated earlier this week, injuring two others. A search of his residence led to the discovery of at least 25 IEDs and a cargo container packed with fireworks. Authorities reported that Fakkema lacked the required licenses to legally possess or alter such explosive materials. The incident raises concerns about public safety and the risks associated with unregulated explosive devices.

The Bellingham Police Department’s Hazardous Devices Unit assisted in the investigation, highlighting the collaborative efforts of local law enforcement. This tragic event underscores the dangers of handling explosives without proper training or authorization. Further investigations may lead to policy discussions regarding the regulation of fireworks and explosive materials in residential areas.
