Several Whatcom County recreation spots among millions of acres of public land eligible for sale under President Trumps proposed bill

Bellingham, WALocal News

President Trump’s proposed spending bill threatens the sale of 250 million acres of public land, including parts of Whatcom County and Mount Baker Ski Area. Senator Patty Murray criticized the bill, stating it could undermine the integrity of public lands used by both Democrats and Republicans. The Wilderness Society's analysis identifies areas around Glacier and Baker Lake as vulnerable to sale. Trowbridge, the ski area’s spokesperson, reassured that the ski area is likely protected due to its location and the bill’s focus on unused lands near urban areas. Senate Republicans maintain that the bill will address housing shortages by utilizing these lands.

Critics, however, argue that such sales could endanger wildlife habitats and local recreational sites. The bill is still in the Senate and aims for passage by July 4. This proposed legislation highlights ongoing debates surrounding land use and conservation in the U. S.
