Public comment period opens for proposed ferry fare increases in Washington state

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Washington State Transportation Commission plans to increase ferry fares and is soliciting public input. A proposed 3% increase for both vehicle and passenger fares will take effect in October 2025, followed by another increase of the same percentage in May 2026. The commission also aims to raise the summer season surcharge to 35% for all ferry routes, mirroring current charges for San Juan routes. This move comes as increased rates for the Lummi Island ferry are set to be implemented on August 23. The commission has opened a public comment period, allowing residents to voice their opinions before the final vote on August 6.

Feedback can be submitted through email, phone, or mail. These proposed fare hikes aim to address rising operational costs for the ferry system. Public participation is crucial as the commission considers the impact on commuters and residents who rely on these services.
