UPDATE Chuckanut Drive to fully reopen today following 58-day closure

Bellingham, WALocal News

Chuckanut Drive will reopen on June 19 at 2 p. m. , concluding a 58-day closure caused by a major rockslide. The Washington State Department of Transportation reported that crews successfully cleared over 3,600 tons of debris, which included 15-20 SUV-sized boulders. In addition to debris removal, workers replaced 125 feet of damaged guardrail and installed anchors to stabilize the slope, enhancing safety for future travelers.

The rockslide, which occurred on April 22, initially left the road covered under boulders estimated to be 30 feet high and 150 feet long. This reopening is crucial for local traffic and tourism, as Chuckanut Drive is a popular scenic route. The efforts to restore the road reflect the commitment to maintaining infrastructure in the region. Local businesses are likely to benefit from increased access as the road serves as a key connector. WSDOT's proactive measures help ensure the safety and longevity of this important roadway.
