Former Whatcom County firefighter and trailblazer to be honored in Olympia

Smith passed away from work-related cancer in March 2024, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication. She was the first woman to serve as a career firefighter with North Whatcom Fire and Rescue, breaking barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field. Before her career, Smith volunteered with the Blaine Fire Department, contributing to its operations until its merger with North Whatcom in 1999. The memorial service will commence at 1 p.
