Former Whatcom County firefighter and trailblazer to be honored in Olympia

Lieutenant Leslee Smith, a pioneering figure in Whatcom County firefighting, will be honored during the Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Olympia on Sunday. Smith passed away from work-related cancer in March 2024, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication. She was the first woman to serve as a career firefighter with North Whatcom Fire and Rescue, breaking barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field. Before her career, Smith volunteered with the Blaine Fire Department, contributing to its operations until its merger with North Whatcom in 1999. The memorial service will commence at 1 p.

m. at the state capitol’s West Campus, where her contributions will be celebrated alongside seven other honorees. This event highlights the importance of honoring those who have made significant sacrifices in the line of duty. Smith's legacy continues to inspire future generations of firefighters, emphasizing the vital role of women in public safety.
