Crabbing season opens this July in Bellingham and the San Juan Islands
The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed the opening of the summer crabbing season in Bellingham and the San Juan Islands from July 17 through September 29. Crabbing will be allowed five days a week on Thursdays through Mondays, giving enthusiasts ample opportunity to participate. Each crabber may catch up to five Dungeness crabs, six red rock crabs, and six tanner crabs per day, contributing to both recreation and the local economy. Furthermore, crabbers must remove their gear from the water one hour after sunset and cannot leave gear in the water on closed days, ensuring responsible fishing practices. This seasonal opening is significant for local crabbers as crabbing is a cherished tradition in the area.
Local officials urge adherence to regulations to protect crab populations and marine ecosystems. The Department of Fish and Wildlife's proactive management reflects a commitment to sustainable fishing practices. By balancing recreational opportunities with environmental stewardship, the region aims to preserve its rich marine resources for future generations.
