Bellingham Public Schools to install solar arrays at five schools in the district

Bellingham, WALocal News

Bellingham Public Schools will install solar arrays at five schools, funded through cap-and-invest dollars from the state’s Climate Commitment Act. The project is expected to save the district $165,000 in utility fees during its first year. Schools benefitting from the solar panels include Alderwood, Happy Valley, Sunnyland elementary schools, Shuksan Middle School, and Options High School. BPS Chief Operating Officer Jessica Sankey stated that the project underscores the district's commitment to sustainability and partnership with local businesses. Markus Virta from Cascadia Renewables emphasized the importance of equipping students with knowledge about clean energy.

The district is also developing a lesson plan that will utilize the solar arrays for hands-on student experience. This initiative reflects a growing trend in schools to incorporate renewable energy solutions. Such projects not only reduce costs but also prepare students for future challenges in energy and sustainability.
