New database set to track law enforcements use of force
Washington law enforcement agencies are required to submit use of force data to a newly established database called the State Data Exchange for Public Safety (WADEPS). Announced by Attorney General Nick Brown, the database stems from a 2021 law that received bipartisan support in the state legislature. The law mandates reporting on incidents involving firearms, tasers, pepper spray, and other methods of force used by officers. Additionally, the database will collect demographic information about both the officers and the individuals involved in these incidents. Agencies have until September 2 to begin their reporting and will need to submit data on a monthly basis thereafter.
This initiative aims to improve transparency and accountability within law enforcement practices. By tracking use of force incidents, the state seeks to identify patterns and address potential issues proactively. The implementation of WADEPS reflects a growing emphasis on police oversight and community trust.
