Bellingham City Council moves to expand affordable housing opportunities
Bellingham City Council approved two ordinances to enhance affordable housing for families, which is increasingly critical amid a housing crisis. The first ordinance allows middle housing, including duplexes and townhomes, to be built in nearly all residential zones, promoting affordability. This interim ordinance will go into effect on June 3, ensuring compliance with forthcoming state laws that mandate such housing options by 2026. The second ordinance amends the city’s multi-family tax exemption program, aiming to raise income eligibility thresholds and broaden the program’s geographic coverage. The council will revisit these proposals for a final vote on June 9.
These measures align with Mayor Kim Lund’s executive order to expedite affordable housing solutions in the city. The push for affordable housing reflects a growing recognition of the need for diverse housing options in Bellingham. Expanding middle housing could significantly impact the local market by providing more accessible living arrangements for families.
