Think twice before going for a swim at Taylor Dock

Bellingham, WALocal News

RE Sources has issued a cautionary warning for swimming in Bellingham Bay after detecting alarmingly high levels of E. coli. Lab samples from a runoff point near Olive Street confirmed bacteria concentrations 50 times above the safe limit, with the water showing discoloration and a rancid odor. Testing at Taylor Dock corroborated the presence of high bacteria levels, emphasizing the area's ongoing water quality issues. Both locations were previously identified as bacteria hotspots in RE Sources' Stormwater Report.

The non-profit advises potential swimmers to avoid entering the water with open wounds and to shower after swimming. These findings may lead to increased scrutiny of stormwater management practices in the region. Swimming in contaminated waters poses health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations. Community awareness and preventive measures are critical to safeguarding public health.
