Skagit County warns community over rise in opioid overdoses

Bellingham, WALocal News

Skagit County officials have raised alarms over a concerning rise in opioid overdoses, especially among individuals in their 20s. The warning followed a spike in non-fatal overdoses reported in Mount Vernon on May 25. Law enforcement is increasingly worried about a particularly potent supply of fentanyl powder in the region, which could be contributing to the surge. Although it remains unclear if the recent incidents are directly related to this fentanyl supply, officials expect the trend of overdoses to continue. The Skagit County Health Department has issued guidance for residents, advising them to carry Naloxone, an effective overdose reversal medication.

They also emphasize the importance of spreading awareness about the overdose spike within the community. This situation reflects a broader issue of opioid misuse that has been escalating across various regions. Addressing this public health crisis is crucial to prevent further loss of life and to support those struggling with addiction.
