New Smokey Bear license plate available this fall in Washington state
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson signed SBB 5444 into law, permitting the sale of a Smokey Bear license plate to fund wildfire prevention initiatives. The plate will be available starting November 1, priced at $40 initially and $30 for renewals. Proceeds will support programs administered by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, which focuses on combating the rise of human-caused wildfires. Smokey Bear has served as a global symbol of wildfire prevention since 1944, highlighting the critical role of human actions in fire incidents. The DNR reports that approximately 90% of wildfires in Washington are caused by human activity.
This initiative aims to foster greater public awareness and financial support for wildfire prevention strategies. By purchasing this license plate, residents can contribute to reducing wildfire risks in their communities. The law reflects a growing commitment to enhancing safety and environmental protection in the region.
