Settlement reached in wrongful death lawsuit

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Clark County Council approved a $3. 5 million settlement in the wrongful death lawsuit of Jenoah Donald, a Black motorist shot by Deputy Sean Boyle during a 2021 traffic stop. Donald lived in Battle Ground and died eight days after being shot in the head. Deputies initiated the stop over a faulty rear light after receiving reports of suspicious vehicles in the area. The situation escalated when another deputy claimed to see a sharp object inside Donald's car, leading to a struggle.

Boyle fired twice when Donald did not comply with commands to let go. Family attorneys stated that the settlement provides accountability and closure, while county spokeswoman Joni McAnally confirmed the county denies liability. This incident underscores broader issues regarding police use of force and community safety. Local leaders may need to take steps to restore public trust in law enforcement following this tragic event.
