Gov. Ferguson signs new law aimed at slowing down drivers in Washington state

Bellingham, WALocal News

Gov. Bob Ferguson signed the BEAM Act into law on May 12, requiring speed limiters for those convicted of serious speeding offenses in Washington state. Intelligent Speed Assistance devices will help ensure vehicles do not exceed posted speed limits. This initiative addresses a worrying trend, as the state’s Traffic Safety Commission reported a 40% rise in fatal speeding-related crashes from 2019 to 2023. The act honors four victims killed by a speeding driver in Renton, who was traveling at 112 mph in a 35 mph zone.

By mandating speed limiters, the law aims to mitigate reckless driving and enhance road safety. Officials are optimistic that the BEAM Act will lead to a decline in speeding incidents and related fatalities. Previous measures to curb speeding have been ineffective, prompting the need for this legislative response. The BEAM Act reflects a growing commitment to improving traffic safety in Washington state.
