WSDOT says Chuckanut Drive closure to extend through June

A significant rockslide has obstructed Chuckanut Drive in Whatcom County, impacting access to popular local attractions. Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced that crews will work six days a week to remove the estimated 150-foot long and 30-foot deep pile of rocks. The closure began on April 22, when the rockslide completely blocked access from the Oyster Dome trailhead to Chuckanut Manor, and is expected to last through June. Despite the blockage, businesses such as Larrabee State Park, The Oyster Bar, and Chuckanut Manor remain open, providing alternatives for visitors. WSDOT plans to break down the largest boulders first before addressing the rock face to expedite the clearing process.

Detours are in place for those traveling from Bellingham and points north or from Burlington and points south. The situation underscores the importance of maintaining access to recreational areas, particularly during the busy summer season. Local officials emphasize the need for timely restoration to support tourism and community engagement.
