WSDOT Updates New I-5 sloth stays, Chuckanut landslide to not be clear for several weeks

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) confirmed that a third stuffed sloth will remain suspended in trees along I-5 due to removal challenges. WSDOT spokesperson RB McKeon stated that removing the sloth would necessitate shutting down the freeway and renting special equipment, so it will stay for the time being. On Chuckanut Drive, WSDOT has not provided a timeline for clearing the rocks, and the road will remain closed between mileposts 9. 5 and 10 for several weeks. Crews are tasked with stabilizing the hillside and repairing the roadway, as social media speculation regarding a July reopening is inaccurate.

Local businesses, including Taylor Shellfish and the Oyster Bar, remain operational and accessible from Bellingham, indicating some resilience in the face of infrastructure challenges. The ongoing situation underscores the impact of transportation issues on local commerce. WSDOT continues to prioritize safety and infrastructure maintenance in this region. Enhanced communication with the public is essential to manage expectations regarding road conditions and closures.
