Dept. of Education opens investigation into Washington state Superintendents Office

Bellingham, WALocal News

The U. S. Department of Education has opened a Title IX investigation into the Washington state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) as of April 30, 2025. Allegations suggest that the OSPI is enforcing policies that allow biological males to compete in female sports and access female facilities, which may violate federal regulations. The La Center School District lodged a complaint claiming the state directs schools not to notify parents about their child's gender identity changes.

Superintendent Chris Reykdal called the investigation an alarming infringement on transgender rights and emphasized the state's commitment to current laws against discrimination. He stated that his office will continue to enforce these laws until Congress or federal courts intervene. The Lynden School Board plans to discuss this issue at a meeting scheduled for May 1. If the investigation finds violations, Washington could face a loss of federal funding, raising significant implications for local schools. This situation highlights the ongoing debate over gender inclusivity in educational policies.
