CONTRIBUTED Whatcom County Sheriffs Office ACS seeks people interested in ham radio
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Auxiliary Communication Service (ACS) invites residents to explore ham radio, a technology that facilitates communication without the internet or cell towers. This service is vital during emergencies, providing direct lines of communication when other systems fail. Volunteers engage in community events like the Ski to Sea race and prepare for emergencies through training and drills. The ACS offers classes year-round for those interested in obtaining an FCC license, with the next training session on May 31 from 9 a. m.
to noon at the Emergency Operations Center in Bellingham. Participants can learn emergency communication skills and contribute to community safety. Robert Greene, the Public Safety Communications Manager, is available for registration and inquiries. This initiative reflects a growing interest in retro technology and its practical applications in modern society. Ham radio not only enhances emergency response but also fosters long-lasting friendships among operators.
