Permanent skate park on Bellinghams waterfront in the works
The Bellingham City Council has taken a significant step toward establishing a formal skatepark by approving the acquisition of land beneath the Roeder Avenue Bridge. This site, currently utilized by the Northwest Skate Collective as an unsanctioned skatepark, will be transformed into a city-owned facility. Mayor Kim Lund has directed city staff to collaborate with the collective on the design, anticipated to be completed by early 2026. While some council members expressed concerns about potential noise, Council Member Hollie Huthman countered that the acoustics under the bridge are favorable for loud activities. The city plans to allocate up to $1.
5 million for the project, with the skate collective expected to fundraise for the remaining costs. The Port of Bellingham will receive a credit for park impact fees in exchange for the land. The city currently operates one skatepark at the Civic Athletic Complex. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of recreational spaces for the community.
