Whatcom County program to divert incarceration partially cut in proposed state budget
Whatcom County's LEAD program, which diverts offenders from incarceration, will face a 30% budget cut in the upcoming state budget. This program aims to assist frequent offenders with mental health and substance use issues, reducing their need for incarceration. Prosecutor Eric Richey highlighted that the initiative is centered on community safety and believes that with adequate support, these individuals are less likely to reoffend. WCHCS spokesperson Marie Junek noted that they will analyze strategies to maintain the program amid funding shortfalls. Historically, LEAD has relied on a balanced budget from state and local sources.
The proposed cuts raise significant concerns about the program's sustainability and its impact on community safety. Local officials emphasize the importance of these services in preventing unnecessary incarceration. The outcome will depend on the governor's decision regarding the new budget.
