Community groups capture invasive green crabs in Blaine
Community groups in Blaine, WA, have initiated efforts to trap invasive European green crabs, capturing about 30 since the season began on March 31. Last year marked a record high, with 535 crabs caught, underscoring the urgency of addressing this invasive threat. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife indicates that European green crabs pose serious ecological and economic risks by preying on native species, including eelgrass and various bivalves. Their impact has contributed to notable declines in commercial bivalve populations in other regions, prompting action in Washington. To bolster local efforts, Washington Sea Grant’s Crab Team and WSU Extension will provide a free training program for volunteers on May 10 at Birch Bay State Park.
Engaging the community plays a vital role in effectively managing this invasive species and safeguarding local ecosystems. The event aims to equip volunteers with the necessary skills and knowledge to assist in trapping efforts. As the threat of invasive species grows, such initiatives become increasingly important for environmental conservation.
