Northwest Straits Foundation receives 3 million to protect Whatcom County shorelines
Washington's Recreation and Conservation Office has awarded over $3 million to the Northwest Straits Foundation (NSF) to protect shorelines in Whatcom County. The funding comes from the state's Climate Commitment Act and aims to enhance salmon spawning habitats by replacing barriers such as seawalls and boulders. NSF has targeted seven coastal areas, including Whatcom and Skagit counties, to reduce obstacles for spawning salmon since 2019. The funding will also offer technical assistance to property owners to help them find the best solutions for their shorelines. This project is expected to make nearly 6.
5 miles of shoreline and streams more accessible for salmon by the end of summer. Improved salmon habitats are critical for maintaining local ecosystems and supporting biodiversity. The initiative highlights Washington's ongoing commitment to environmental restoration and climate action. By enhancing natural shorelines, the project aims to promote healthier fish populations and marine environments.
