Whatcom County burn ban issued to begin on June 15

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Whatcom County Fire Marshal's Office will impose a Stage 1 burn ban starting June 15, prohibiting yard debris and land clearing burns in unincorporated areas of the county. Recreational fires in approved fire pits and barbecues will still be allowed, ensuring some outdoor activities can continue. This year's ban begins earlier than 2024, when the restriction took effect on July 1 and was lifted on September 14. Residents in Point Roberts, Lummi Island, and Sandy Point fire districts must check with local authorities for specific outdoor burning guidelines. The early implementation of the ban reflects heightened concerns about fire safety as temperatures rise.

Authorities emphasize adherence to the ban to mitigate the risk of wildfires during the dry season. This proactive measure aims to protect both residents and the environment. The Fire Marshal's Office continues to monitor conditions closely and may adjust regulations as necessary.
