The Northwest Clean Air Agency (NWCAA) is investing up to $3 million in two climate action projects within Bellingham, WA, aimed at enhancing sustainability and reducing emissions. The City of Bellingham will receive $1. 7 million to establish a community solar array, expected to generate annual savings of $69,000 for the Climate Action Fund. This initiative is designed to support diverse sustainability projects over the next 20 years, as highlighted by Bellingham’s Climate Energy Manager, Seth Vidaña. 303 million to collaborate with Mercy Housing in installing ductless heat pumps at the Sterling Meadows complex, which provides housing for farm workers and their families. Mark Schofield from the Opportunity Council noted the superior efficiency of these heat pumps compared to traditional heating systems, underscoring their role in promoting energy conservation. The funding for these projects originates from a 2023 settlement with Petrogas West LLC, addressing significant air quality issues linked to the Cherry Point refinery.
