Bellingham gas prices jump up, but likely wont last
Gas prices in Bellingham have risen by 30 cents over the past month, now averaging $4. 37 per gallon, as reported by AAA. This increase is attributed to refinery maintenance and the transition to summer-blend gasoline, but prices remain below last year's average of $4. 64 and the peak of $5. 54 recorded in October 2022.
Factors contributing to fluctuating prices include decreasing oil prices due to U. S. tariffs and OPEC+ restoring production more quickly than expected. Patrick De Haan from GasBuddy indicates that if tariffs are not reduced soon, national averages could drop below $3 per gallon, although market volatility poses uncertainties. In addition, the Washington State Legislature is considering proposals for gas tax increases, with the Senate suggesting a 6-cent hike and the House proposing a 9-cent increase aligned with inflation.
Elsewhere in the state, prices have also risen, with Seattle averaging $4. 56 per gallon. The current average in Washington State stands at $4. 39, significantly higher than the national average of $3. 26.
As motorists navigate this fluctuating landscape, the implications of legislative actions and global market trends continue to unfold.
