The City of Ferndale has appointed Sean O’Laughlin as its new chief of police, succeeding Kevin Turner, who left to lead the Burlington Police Department. With over two decades of law enforcement and military experience, O’Laughlin has held roles at the UW Police Department and as Deputy Chief of Police at Eastern Washington University. During a recent community meeting, he highlighted his commitment to community policing, advocating for initiatives such as school events and community surveys to gather public feedback. Mayor Greg Hansen expressed optimism about O’Laughlin’s engagement with the community, stating he would be an enthusiastic addition. The chief position comes with a competitive salary range of $145,000 to $170,000, based on qualifications.

O’Laughlin is set to officially start on July 2, following the completion of a background check and other evaluations. Interim Chief Matt Huffman will remain in his role until the transition is complete. This strategic appointment reflects the city's commitment to enhancing public safety and community relations.
