Bellingham Public Library seeks donations to upgrade childrens department

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Bellingham Central Library is gearing up for the next phase of its extensive renovation project, targeting updates to its youth spaces and meeting rooms. This initiative comes after a successful first phase concluded in 2021, which modernized the main floor and improved public facilities. The total cost for the upcoming renovations is projected at $7 million, with the library requesting $2 million from the state's Library Capital Improvement Program. To address the funding shortfall, a fundraising campaign has been launched in conjunction with National Library Giving Day, aiming to raise $3. 5 million in private donations.

So far, $1. 4 million has been pledged, and a generous donor has offered to match up to $100,000 in new gifts this year. The library’s deputy director emphasized the need for an updated space, stating that the community deserves a clean and current environment for children and teens. Beyond the immediate renovations, plans include replacing the existing HVAC system with an electric one, enhancing the library's energy efficiency. The overall project aims to create a welcoming space for all patrons, especially vulnerable community members, while ensuring accessibility and sustainability.
