Bellingham Public Schools seeks feedback on district-wide changes

Bellingham, WALocal News

Bellingham Public Schools (BPS) is reaching out to the community for feedback on proposed changes to its school calendar and budget, as it faces a daunting $15 million deficit for the upcoming academic year. Superintendent Greg Baker has outlined several options, including a reduction of the school calendar to 179 days by taking advantage of a state waiver day. This change would shift the first day of school to the Tuesday after Labor Day, moving the last day to June 12, 2025. Another proposal involves introducing optional fees of $100 per season for high school sports and drivers’ education classes, which would support the district’s Project Free Education initiative. This initiative is designed to assist low-income families by providing school supplies and facilitating participation in school activities at no cost.

Community members are encouraged to share their opinions on these proposals through March 28, 2025. More detailed information and a feedback form can be accessed via the BPS website. Engaging the community in this decision-making process is crucial for the district as it navigates these financial challenges.
