Weigh in on proposed budget cuts for Bellingham Public Schools Cascadia Daily News

Bellingham, WALocal News

Facing a daunting $15 million budget deficit, Bellingham Public Schools is reaching out to the community for input on proposed cuts aimed at maintaining educational quality. Superintendent Greg Baker announced plans to revise the school calendar, potentially reducing school days and staff learning days. Additionally, the district may introduce $100 fees for high school sports and driver's education for families who can afford it. Baker stresses that these decisions are not taken lightly and aim to protect classroom resources amid financial constraints. The school district has already taken steps such as staff reductions and cutting non-essential expenditures.

The funding challenges are reflective of a larger trend statewide, where many districts are struggling with budget issues exacerbated by inadequate state funding. The district is particularly affected by state funding mechanisms that do not account for inflation, leading to a projected shortfall of nearly $11 million for the upcoming school year. Community feedback is crucial and will be accepted until March 28, as the district seeks to navigate these tough financial waters.
