Fairhaven Quiet Zone launches, reducing train horn noise
Fairhaven has officially established a "quiet zone," significantly reducing train horn noise for its residents thanks to comprehensive upgrades at five rail crossings. This achievement is the culmination of nearly two decades of planning and collaboration between the City of Bellingham, the Port of Bellingham, and federal agencies. The safety upgrades, which adhere to federal standards, include enhanced signage, automated crossing control gates, and pedestrian exit gates, all designed to minimize the need for train horns. Mayor Kim Lund praised the teamwork behind this initiative, which aims to create a more peaceful and livable community. While the quiet zone will lessen noise pollution, train horns will still be necessary for safety in emergencies and specific situations.
Port Executive Director Rob Fix noted that this project has long been a priority, emphasizing its role in enhancing the quality of life for Whatcom County residents. The project reflects a strategic investment in infrastructure that balances safety with community needs. Ultimately, the Fairhaven Quiet Zone represents a significant step towards a quieter, safer urban environment.
