Whats the Deal With Lloyd the cardboard dragon?

Bellingham, WALocal News

In the lobby of the Whatcom County Library System administration office, Lloyd the cardboard dragon stands as a delightful artistic creation by Birch Bay artist Kim Morris. Designed for the November 2024 WCLS Open Book event and funded by community donations, Lloyd features intricate details, including circular spectacles and a book, surrounded by a whimsical forest of cardboard trees and critters. Morris, a versatile artist who works with various mediums, opted for cardboard due to its affordability and creative potential, collecting materials from local residents and the library. The meticulous construction process took three months, resulting in a dragon taller than the average man, although it is not her largest work to date. Named after her brother Gregory Lloyd Morris, who tragically passed away in a Coast Guard accident, Lloyd carries a personal significance for the artist.

The dragon occasionally travels to different libraries in Whatcom County, where it continues to inspire and engage the community. Morris's dedication to her craft and the collaborative spirit of the local community reflect the importance of art in public spaces. For those interested, a podcast discussing Lloyd and Morris's artistic journey is available through the WCLS.
