Port Commission approves next step in Millworks housing project

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Port of Bellingham has officially approved the design documents for the second phase of the Millworks project, a significant development on the Bellingham waterfront. This phase will feature a local food campus, office spaces, and around 109 units of workforce housing aimed at the "missing middle" demographic. The first phase of the project, which included 83 affordable housing units and community facilities, has been a success, with most units already occupied. The second phase is projected to cost over $140 million and will be financed through a blend of public and private funding sources. Whatcom Community Foundation and Mercy Housing Northwest have been instrumental in driving the project forward.

After obtaining building permits within 120 days, construction could potentially begin in late 2025, with completion expected by late 2027. This initiative not only enhances housing accessibility but also aims to create a vibrant community with job opportunities in proximity. The project is a vital part of Bellingham's growth strategy, ensuring families can enjoy waterfront living.
