Threat of looming trade war with Canada could have negative impacts across Whatcom County - My Bellingham Now

Bellingham, WALocal News

Whatcom County is facing potential economic turmoil due to an impending trade war with Canada, following President Trump's announcement of a 25% tax on all imported goods from Canada. According to a recent Leger poll, 81% of Canadians are shifting their purchasing preferences towards domestic products, and 56% are likely to avoid traveling to the U. S. This consumer behavior could lead to significant losses for local businesses in Whatcom County that rely heavily on Canadian visitors, particularly in the service industry. Jennifer Bettis from WWU’s Border Policy Research Institute warns that job losses may occur in sectors dependent on cross-border traffic, as reduced spending from visitors could directly impact service-related jobs.

Additionally, the potential for increased prices on essential commodities like gas and lumber is heightened if Canada retaliates with its own tariffs. Bettis also emphasizes the long-term damage this trade tension could inflict on U. S. -Canada relations, which have historically been strong. As Trump’s tariffs are set to be implemented on March 5, the situation is urgent for local stakeholders to strategize and mitigate potential risks.

The economic repercussions could resonate throughout the community, making it crucial for residents and businesses to stay informed and engaged.
