Bellingham, WALocal News

The opening of the Bellingham didgʷálič Wellness Center on February 14, 2025, marked a significant milestone for local health services, celebrated by tribal leaders and Whatcom County officials. This facility, located at 2030 Division St. , Suite B, is the second of its kind operated by the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, following the success of the original center in Anacortes, which has been recognized as a national model for opioid care. The Bellingham center comprises two mobile medical units specifically designed to dispense methadone and buprenorphine, along with a small clinic to serve patients' needs. Additionally, patients can receive transportation to the Anacortes location for more comprehensive care.

The arrangement between Whatcom County and Swinomish Health Services allows the latter to lease the clinic space for just $10 a month, emphasizing the community’s commitment to addressing health disparities. Over $1 million has been invested into staffing, mobile units, and facility improvements, showcasing a robust approach to tackling opioid addiction. The involvement of tribal leaders and government officials at the ribbon-cutting ceremony underlines the collaborative effort towards improving local healthcare access. This initiative not only aims to provide essential treatment but also represents a proactive step in enhancing the overall health and wellness of the community.
