Public Comment to Resume at Jan. 13 City Council Meeting

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Bellingham City Council is reinstating in-person public comment periods beginning January 13, 2025, after a temporary suspension in November 2024 aimed at addressing security concerns. Council President Hollie Huthman highlighted the need for updated security protocols given the evolving needs of public safety since the construction of City Hall in 1939. To enhance safety, attendees will undergo metal detector screenings conducted by Homeland Security Operations, a local private security firm. Mayor Kim Lund stated that these measures are intended to create a secure environment that encourages community participation. The screenings will only be required during evening meetings, with future plans for additional safety enhancements in 2025.

Community members are urged to arrive early to accommodate the screening process, especially since the January 13 meeting features a public hearing expected to attract significant interest. The city aims to foster civil discourse while ensuring that everyone feels welcome at City Hall. Feedback can also be submitted via email or during public hearings, ensuring multiple avenues for community engagement.
