Salvation Army Bellingham receives 50K grant for food pantry

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Salvation Army Bellingham Corps has been granted $50,000 to enhance its food pantry services, thanks to a generous $1 million donation from Dolly Parton. This funding is crucial for the Hope Market client-choice food pantry, which opened in November 2021 and expanded in March 2024 to meet increasing demand. According to Major Shevaun Malone, the grant will enable the organization to continue providing healthy food options to those facing food insecurity in Whatcom County. In 2024 alone, the Salvation Army supported over 9,100 individuals, processing 14,500 grocery orders and serving nearly 1,900 meals and snacks. During the holidays, they also distributed 7,000 toys to 1,000 children from 420 families, showcasing their commitment to community welfare.

The partnership with Dolly Parton underscores the vital role that philanthropic efforts play in addressing local needs. As the organization continues to expand its services, it highlights the importance of community collaboration in combating food insecurity. This initiative serves as a beacon of hope for many families in the region.
