DUI arrests reach new high in Bellingham, reminder to stay safe this holiday season

Bellingham has recorded over 420 DUI arrests this year, a sharp increase compared to 360 in 2024 and 351 in 2023. The rise in DUI incidents aligns with a concerted effort by law enforcement to enhance patrols, as highlighted by Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Murphy. She indicated that the real number of DUI offenses may be even higher since more serious crimes take precedence in booking. In response to the growing concern over impaired driving, the Washington State Patrol will conduct targeted patrols around Western Washington University on November 26.

This initiative, dubbed “No Tipsy Turkey,” aims to remind college students and other drivers of the dangers of drinking and driving during the holiday season. The WSP also stresses the importance of seatbelt use as a critical safety measure. As the holiday approaches, local authorities are prioritizing road safety to prevent accidents related to impaired driving. The increase in DUI arrests reflects a broader trend in rising traffic enforcement in the region post-pandemic.
