Port of Bellingham seeks feedback on redistricting plans for new commissioners

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Port of Bellingham is actively seeking feedback on its redistricting plan to expand the board of commissioners from three to five members. A public hearing will take place on December 9 at 2 PM in the Harbor Center Commission Chambers. The expansion was approved by voters earlier this month, with 65% in favor of adding two new commissioners, who will be elected in November 2026. The proposal aims to establish five commissioner districts that mirror the boundaries of the existing Whatcom County Council districts. Written comments on the redistricting plan will be accepted until December 8, offering residents a chance to voice their opinions.

This change is intended to improve representation in local governance and reflect the needs of the community. The Port encourages civic engagement as it moves forward with the redistricting process. The expansion signifies a shift towards more inclusive governance in Bellingham.
